Response to Swift

A Modest Proposal

1. What is the problem that Swift identifies in his society? What does he want to do about it?
The problem that Swift identifies in his society is that there are many having babies that cannot afford to be having them and they are starving to death or begging and stealing to survive. Swift is trying to find a solution for so many children being born to poverty and so many poor people continuing to give birth when they cannot afford to feed themselves let alone more children.
 2. Is his suggestion serious? If not, what is the purpose? What is he making fun of?
I don’t think Swift is making a serious suggestion. He is making an attempt at being funny. He seems to be making fun of how the people of poverty survive when they can’t seem to stop having children.
 3. Is his solution logical? What kind of evidence does he give to support his position?
I do not think this is a logical solution because who in their right mind wants to have children so they can sell them like they would if they were raising cattle or chickens. In Swift’s proposal he has evidence to support his position, however, it is not logical to believe in his proposal.

  1. Good job addressing all the questions for the assignment! Swift's essay is not serious at all, and I think this is a great satire piece. He uses great support for his ridiculous solution to Ireland's poor.

  2. I disagree that his solution is not logical. He has very clear and distinct reasons behind everything he proposes. They may not be pretty and he may not be serious but he is most certainly being logical. Groovy post.

  3. I don't believe Swift was necessarily making fun of poor people and how they have so many children. I think his intention is to attract rich people and point out what they are doing to Ireland's society. I do agree that his proposal seems appealing, but it is not logical.

  4. Hey Toni,

You caught my attention when you brought up the idea of poverty unable to survive and provide for themselves. I didn't view the article this way. I felt he was over dramtatizing people's irrational behavior to come up with solutions to the poverty population. There by using humor and using an unlogical solution to a major problem. The Wealthy class finds these people a nuisance, and want a quick fix. What better way to do this thant by using them as cattle, or as a profit. Good view!

  5. I agree he has great reasoning and detail for every detail he proposed. It was a good essay for Satire reading. Although it was difficult for me to read and follow, It hit everything and had context for all ideas or points made. It shows us that no matter what your writing about you can have those things.

  6. Great job with the blog. I believe you answered the questions relating to the assignment. I agree with you the satire essay suggestion that eating babies was not serious. It definitely got my attention and I guessed served its purpose in waking up the reader and challenging them. You made good points in a clear direct manner. I appreciated your post. Thank you.
