Summary vs Analysis
A summary is a description of a story, poem, movie, etc.. the
plot, what happens in the story. It does not give great detailed
information about the story just the quick replay of what went
on. Like doing a book report when we were in grade school and
school. Summarizing explains to the reader what happens,
describes the scenes and does not leave the reader with a reason
to argue that this is not what happens or that is not how they
that. It just explains the book.
To do the analysis you are proving your personal points of a
story. Making argumentative statements about the story and you
need to be sure you can back your arguments up with points that
you make in your analysis. Asking yourself if someone could make
an argument out of what you are analyzing. Break the story into
smaller pieces. An analysis assumes the reader is familiar with
reader.
The links I have attached to Summary and
Analysis I feel are good explanations of
what the answer is in a nutshell.
I like that you explained the two in such a straightforward way. It's important to remember that well written analysis's have examples from the story that back their argument. I also appreciate the links at the bottom that refer me to a formal definition of both summary and analysis to make sure there is no confusion. Good post. :)
ReplyDeleteFirst off a technical note. Your post is spaced strangely and I had difficulty reading it.
ReplyDeleteI disagree with your statement "A summary does not give great detailed information about the story" A summary could give extremely detailed information about specific parts of the source materiel. I agree with the statement "An analysis assumes the reader is familiar with the story". If you were not familiar with a story and you heard someones analysis of it you could potentially read the story later and have no idea that is the same subject they were referring to.
I am a bit new at this whole posting stuff so I am trying to figure out how to make it with color in the back so it isn't so bright and maybe a little easier on the eye's as well. Thanks for the insight Cason much appreciated.
DeleteI really appreciate how you explained the differences between a summary and an analysis. Although the format in which it was written confused me a little bit, it was interesting and made me more inclined to read and it was somewhat refreshing. I agree almost completely with the way that you see these two almost apposing literary elements. Except, like Cason said I feel like there can be great detail in a summary if it is an in depth one.
ReplyDeleteToni,
ReplyDeleteThe spacing on your post was very strange and obviously not purposeful. It made it slightly hard to read because I thought it was a poem at first! It took me a moment to realize it wasn't. Next time just make sure you preview it before you post and you shouldn't have any problems. I thought you used great usage of links. Great visual too, I am excited to see more of your work!
Hey Toni,
ReplyDeleteI agree the spacing was odd, but I'm figuring out this blogger.com scene to. It is unfamiliar. I am sure we will get use to it. As for your paper it was nicely put. You had great terms to define both summary and analysis. Good Job!
